A.I.R. GUSTAVSVIK 2024: AN ARTIST RUN INITIATIVE INVESTIGATING THE CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES IN CAMPSITE AESTHETICS

„IS THERE A PLACE FOR ART IN AN ARTIFICIAL ENVIRONMENT?“

…is one of the questions me and Norwegian artist and collaborator Guro Aae were discussing,  when we decided to attempt to set up an artist driven, independent AiR in Örebro in the early summer of 2024. We are interested in spaces where art does not have a natural place. Spaces that not automatically make a work of art understandable as an artwork, in the way that a white cube would. Present politics like to combine cultural value with leisure activities, art with entertainment. Ignoring the fact, that even seen as a leisure activity or entertainment, art would have a very different audience than activities containing a more instant satisfaction. We recognized Gustavsvik as a relevant, yet unexplored, place in the city to take this discussion. We received funding for the project by Region Örebro Län and were able to rent a cabin and a tent lot at Gustavsvik’s campsite in Örebro for 8 days, and in addition to ourselves, offer two more artists, Tedde Twetman and Mathijs van Sark, the opportunity to use the campsite as an experimental hub to explore their own site specific artistic practices under the tagline „artistic freedom/campsite rules“.
