standard

What does

measurement

it mean?

nihilism

was first defined as a term, and later as an artistic practice and expression in 2021 by artists Charlotte Ostritsch and Jonatan Björkman. Under the group name Standardformatnihilsterna they devote their shared artistic production to investigating various types of standard measurements in their immediate surroundings, as well as the stylistic consequences of choosing one measurement over another. Instead of consuming and discussing what is created, they focus on the historical progress that allows us to do just that – create.

The standard measurements of all produced material goods tell an important story about the absolute contemporary and about the future of objects. The world knows how x came to be, but no one knows the story of why the folio paper measurement was butchered by the still prevailing DIN-A4 format*.

*The A4 format (DIN A4) is 210 mm x 297 mm. It is the most common measurement for writing paper worldwide and one of the formats standardized in the DIN standard „DIN 476“ and the ISO standard „DIN EN SO 216“.
